Neurosurgery

Overview of the Department:

Holy Cross Hospital, Kottiyam has one of the oldest Neurosurgery Departments in Kerala. Established in the 1990s. The Department has a devoted Operating Room with a new high-end Leica Neurosurgical Operating Microscope, Midas Rex Craniotome Drill System, Storz NeuroEndoscope, Intra Operative X-ray Fluoroscopy and Intra Operative Ultrasound machines. The high-end microscope helps surgeons better visualize small structures inside the brain like tumors and aneurysms. The Craniotome helps surgeons make precise openings in the skull and bone to remove tumours, blood clots etc., The Intra intra-operative ultrasound machine is used during surgery to locate tumours and clots precisely, minimizing damage to adjacent normal brain structures. X-ray fluoroscopy machine is used during spine surgery to check and confirm the ideal trajectory and position for implants like screws during spinal fixation procedures. NeuroEndoscopes allow Endoscopic treatment for procedures like Third Ventriculostomy for hydrocephalus and treatment of intraventricular pathology like Colloid Cysts of the Third Ventricle. A Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit with dedicated doctors, nurses and physiotherapists helps provide specialized care to Neurosurgical patients like patients with Brain tumours. aneurysms, intracranial bleeding and after spinal procedures. Pediatric neurosurgical patients are also made comfortable in this dedicated ICU. Ventilators, Bedside Monitors, Infusion Pumps and other equipment to provide intensive care are available. The department provides treatment for a wide range of diseases affecting the brain and the spine. These include 1. Surgical treatment of benign and malignant brain tumours 2. Surgical clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms of the anterior circulation 3. Surgical treatment of hemorrhagic stroke/ intracranial haemorrhage 4. Surgical treatment of disorders of the craniovertebral junction like Chiari Malformation 5. Surgical and Medical Management of Traumatic Brain Injury 6. Surgical and Medical Management of Spinal injuries 7. Microsurgical and Conventional Surgeries for Degenerative Disease of the Spine 8. Surgical Treatment of Spinal Tumors 9. Vertebroplasty for severe osteoporosis, osteoporotic fractures, multiple myeloma-related painful conditions 10. Treatment of Hydrocephalus in children and adults 11. Treatment of Congenital Spinal dysraphism in children 12. Balloon Rhizotomy for Medicine Resistant Trigeminal Neuralgic Pain 13. NeuroEndoscopy for hydrocephalus in children and adults (Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy) and for intraventricular tumours like Colloid Cysts of the Third Ventricle. Holy Cross Hospital also has trained therapists working as a team in close cooperation with our Doctors and Nurses to help patients with neurologic deficits return to near-normal functional status.

Services

Skull Procedures

Our proficient team is adept at skull-related interventions, including addressing fractures, tumors, and correcting skull deformities, which are vital for restoring cranial integrity. These procedures ensure protection of the brain, alleviate pain, and improve functionality, allowing patients to regain a normal life.

Brain Interventions

Our department specializes in intricate brain surgeries, tackling conditions like hydrocephalus, aneurysms, tumors, and traumatic injuries. With both open and endoscopic procedures, we aim to diagnose and treat neurological disorders effectively. These interventions are critical for preserving brain function, preventing further complications, and enhancing patients' overall well-being.

Spine Treatments

From fractures and fixation to discectomy for back and neck pain, our experts offer a range of spine procedures. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are instrumental in stabilizing spinal fractures, reducing pain, and improving mobility. These treatments are designed to enhance spinal health, allowing patients to lead active lives with reduced discomfort.

Spinal Cord Interventions

Addressing issues like bleeding, tumors, degenerative diseases, and disc problems, our department employs open, minimally invasive, and endoscopic techniques. These procedures are essential for managing spinal cord-related problems, promoting healing, and alleviating pain. By offering comprehensive solutions, we empower patients to overcome spinal challenges and enjoy a better quality of life.
